Recently on Instagram, actress Hilary Duff threw a little shade towards Disney+ with a comment on the decision to move “Love, Simon” to HULU. Disney+ cited the show as not being “family-Friendly” and more appropriate for the HULU platform. But, Duff’s headline of “Sound Familiar…” has fans questioning the future of the Lizzie McGuire reboot promised for 2020.

The original series, starring Hilary Duff, aired on the Disney Channel. Lizzie had a large following of young girls who, just like the now 32 year-old Duff, have grown up. The show ran from 2001 to 2004 and was created by Terri Minsky. It also spawned a movie that earned $55 million at the box office.

The Reboot
According to an article by Newsweek, production begin in November of 2019. Show creator, Terri Minsky, was fired in January 2020. A spokesman from Disney says “After filming two episodes, we concluded that we need to move in a different direction and are putting a new lens on the show, “ (Variety). Minsky hinted that her version was a more adult updated show with Lizzie navigating her 30’s.

“I would love the show to exist, but ideally I would love it if it could be given that treatment of going to Hulu and doing the show that we were doing. That’s the part where I am completely in the dark. It’s important to me that this show was important to people. I felt like I wanted to do a show that was worthy of that kind of devotion.” (Duff to Newsweek)

Release Date?
So, what does this mean for an actual release date for Lizzie McGuire? Will the show appear on Disney+ or HULU? Right now there is no change in which platform the show will be aired on. Disney+ is still claiming the unfinished production and according to Variety, still interviewing new showrunners to replace Minsky. A 2020 debut may be a stretch at this point with all the production delays. Look for Lizzie in 2021 alongside other anticipated shows like “The Falcon and Winter Soldier”, “WandaVision” and “The Mandalorian”.
