Marvel President Risked Job for Female-Led Films
Women have been dominating the silver screen in recent years, especially when it comes to superhero films. Female-led movies were a gamble for moviemakers, who were uncertain if crowds would turn up for female heroes. In an interview with Adam White of Independent, Mark Ruffalo revealed that Marvel president Kevin Feige risked everything to help create these films.
Female-Led Superhero Films
In the interview with Independent, Ruffalo shared how Kevin Feige sought to diversify the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Prior to Avengers, a film starring female superhero movies was relatively unheard of. Ruffalo explained that when Feige pitched the idea to Isaac Perlmutter, he did not expect it to go well. Feige reportedly told Ruffalo: “Listen, I might not be here tomorrow. Ike does not believe that anyone will go to a female-starring superhero movie. So if I am still here tomorrow, you will know that I won that battle.”

Evidently the conversation went well, because eight years later and audiences are continuing to demand female-led superhero movies. After DC released Wonder Woman in 2017, Marvel stepped up to the plate. They released Captain America, which brought in $1.128 billion at the box office.
This year Marvel will release Black Widow starring Scarlett Johansson. This stand-alone film will tell the story of Natasha Romanova, and will hit theaters on April 24, 2020. Check out a special look at the film below:
