Rick Moranis To Come Out Of Retirement For ‘Honey, I Shrunk The Kids’ Reboot
We’ve got some exciting news for fans of the “Honey, I Shrunk the Kids” franchise. As we previously reported here on MickeyBlog, reports are coming in that a reboot is in the works. And there’s a possibility that Rick Moranis could reprise the role!
This is a big deal as Moranis has essentially retired from acting and has been out of the spotlight since the 1990s. He hasn’t starred in a film in over 20 years. This is not the first time he’s been approached to reprise his role in a film. According to a piece on MovieWeb, Moranis was asked to return for the Ghostbusters reboot Ghostbusters: Afterlife but declined.
One of the reasons why Moranis may be considering a return is that his proposed role in the Disney reboot is bigger. According to sources, he’s in talks to reprise the role of Wayne Szalinski where he will star along Josh Gad who will be playing his adult son Nick. Shrunk is being called a “legecysequel” which means it exists in the same world and continues the storyline.
When reports initially surfaced regarding the reboot it was thought that the project would go directly to the Disney+ streaming network. However, the current rumor is that Disney is considering it for a theatrical release. Moranis also wouldn’t be the only person from the original to return. Back in December, it was reported the original director Joe Johnston is in negotiations to return to the director’s chair.
Moranis stepped away from acting after the death of his wife. He decided instead to focus on his family. He previously said of the decision, “I’m a single parent and I just found that it was too difficult to manage to raise my kids and to do the travelling involved in making movies.” However, his break from acting ended up being a lot longer than even he expected. “So I took a little bit of a break. And the little bit of a break turned into a longer break, and then I found that I really didn’t miss it.”
