8 Under-The-Radar Films Worth Checking Out On Disney+ This Month
Though so much of the focus when it comes to Disney+ has been on original programming like The Mandalorian there is a massive vault of awesome movies just waiting to be discovered by fans both old and new! With that in mind, we’ve taken a look at some of the movies currently available on Disney’s new streaming services and highlighted a few that we think are worthy of a watch (or re-watch.)
Check them out:
Queen of Katwe
Mira Nair (The Namesake, Monsoon Wedding) is a master of making simple moments seem extraordinary! That what makes this tale, set in an impoverished corner of Uganda about a young grill who becomes a chess superstar seem so special! Lupita Nyong’o and David Oyelowo shine in their roles and newcomer Madina Nalwanga leaves firmly believing that with the right amount of support a true champion can come from anywhere!
The Love Bug
These days the Love Bug is known primarily as that slightly obscure section of buildings at All-Star Movies but if it’s been a while since you’ve seen the film it’s definitely worth a re-watch. This 1969 classic tells the tale of a Volkswagen Beetle with a mind of its own! Dean Jones stars as Dean, a racer on a losing streak. That is until he forms a bond with Herbie and drives him in the legendary El Dorado Race. The movie is dated but we still think it holds up 50 years later!
Donald Duck: Chip an’ Dale
This 1947 cartoon is the first known appearance of the legendary chipmunk duo. Donald isn’t being particularly friendly to these adorable rodents and they (of course) decide to unleash their cute brand of mischief to retaliate. The 6 minute short takes nearly no time at all to squeeze into your movie night and is big on Disney nostalgia!
Frank and Ollie
I am totally smitten with this documentary about Frank Thomas and Ollie Johnston. They were both members of the original “Nine Old Men” group. They where there with Walt when he came up with the concept for his first feature-length film Snow White as well as other pivotal moments from The Walt Disney Company’s history. In this documentary, viewers are invited behind the scene as the duo share their stories about what it was like to be part of Disney history!
Treasure Planet
I’ll forgive this film the soundtrack by the Goo Goo Dolls because it really is quite fantastic. This steampunk-style film has it all, thrill adventures, space pirates and absolutely astounding visuals. Though it flopped at the box office we think that had more to do with the fact that it opened at the same time as the first Harry Potter film. Make up your own mind by giving it a watch on Disney+
Destino
This film is a wild card of the avant-garde. Destino was conceived by and storyboarded by none other than Salvador Dali back in the 1940s. However, due to World War II the film never really saw the light of day until 50 years later. Walt’s brother Roy recovered the boards and finished this surreal film, unlike anything you’ve ever seen before! It combines elements of mythology, dance and iconic Dali imagery to create an artistic masterpiece.
Pete’s Dragon
This was one of Disney’s first classic films to be given the live-action treatment and though it remained slightly under-the-radar, it’s actually quite a good flick! Set in the Pacific Northwest, the film still features a giant, fluffy, talking dragon but without the animation. The movie still centres around a semi-feral boy left to live in the woods who must reconnect with society. There is some awesome action and big emotional moments here!
The Rocketeer
Though a flop when it first came out, The Rocketeer has gone on to become a bit of a Disney cult classic! It is a retro adventure about the FBI and the Nazi’s fighting over an invention made by Howard Hughes. A stun pilot stumbles upon this jetpack and it transforms him into a superhero of sorts!
