All About Shanghai Disney’s Chinese New Year
Although technically Mickey and Minnie are mice, they are kicking off the Chinese New Year of the Rat in style by inviting visitors to the Shanghai Disney Resort to start the new year off right. From January 13 to February 9, 2020, Shanghai Disney Resort will be immersed in the immersive New Year atmosphere.
Shanghai Disney Chinese New Year Character Meet and Greets
The new design of the Chinese New Year’s clothing for our favorite characters also made a grand debut. Mickey leads the Dragon Dance Acrobatic Troupe with dragon elements running through his costume. Minnie is dressed as a ribbon dancer with many beautiful butterfly elements on her costume.
Donald Duck is a lantern hanger, Daisy is dressed as a fan dancer, and Kiki and Titi are two adorable drummers. Goofy will once again dress up as a “God of Wealth” and help pass on the good luck of the New Year. Guests can visit Mickey Avenue and take photos with their Disney friends dressed in their Spring Festival attire.
Shanghai Disney Chinese New Year Experiences
Visitors can now also enjoy a series of unique New Year’s experiences, including shooting videos with new Disney theme filters on mobile phones, adding theme stickers, sharing special blessings and red envelopes with friends and relatives, and adding magic to the wonderful Year of the Rat. During the Spring Festival, the “Twelve Friends Garden” will once again be transformed into a “Wishing Garden” for the new year, and will use special festive decorations to highlight the mosaic mural symbolizing the zodiac sign of the year of the rat. It’s here that visitors can get special wishing cards to record their wishes of the Chinese New Year.
Each morning during the Chinese New Year festival, Mickey and Minnie will host a drumming ceremony around the storyteller sculpture in the Whimsical Garden. In addition, each day during the afternoon, Mickey and his friends will join the dynamic dancers in old Shanghai costumes.
Then each night in front of the fantasy fairy tale castle, after the “Lighting Dream: Luminous Phantom Show” performance, visitors can enjoy a special presentation, led by Mickey, that combines multiple projections of Disney-themed movies with Chinese calligraphy, traditional music, festive lanterns, festive colors and Chinese New Year greetings, as well as a special performance of gorgeous fireworks.
Shanghai Disney Chinese New Year Dining
In the Spring Festival tradition, the reunion dinner with the whole family is essential. On January 23 and 24, the Cinderella Ballroom of Shanghai Disneyland Hotel will offer a beautiful New Year’s Eve dinner package for tourists. In addition to enjoying the food, you can also experience paper-cutting, pumpkin carving, sugar painting and dumplings full of Chinese folk customs. Plus, Mickey and Minnie will join in the fun during the meal.
At the Moon Moon Restaurant in the paradise, visitors can taste a variety of New Year dishes, such as Mickey Roasted Meat, Steamed Chicken with Glutinous Rice, Douyu and other dozens of traditional dishes. The royal banquet hall in the fantasy fairy tale castle will also launch a fairy tale feast of Chinese and Western cuisines for two to four people.
Throughout the festival, visitors can also enjoy a variety of Mickey-shaped treats and desserts in the park. The Xiaomi Chef Bakery brings visitors a variety of new flavored cakes, such as the festive New Year Mickey Cranberry Cupcake and the fresh Spring Strawberry Lemon Cake. In addition, Paparino Ice Cream will launch a New Year Mickey Waffle with Purple Potato Ice Cream and Mickey Purple Potato Flavored Ice Cream Cone, which will delight ice cream lovers.
The Lumiya kitchen at Shanghai Disneyland Hotel will also be decorated during the Spring Festival. The limited-time Chinese New Year buffet feast includes a variety of fine seafood, grilled meat selections, hearty Chinese and Western cuisines, and Chinese New Year themed desserts. Plus, Mickey, Minnie and Pluto will be there for pictures. The Sunshine Food Festival located at Toy Story Hotel will also launch a Chinese New Year buffet feast from January 24th to January 30th.
Shanghai Disney Chinese New Year Merchandise
At the beginning of the new year, Shanghai Disney Resort launched the 2020 New Year Mickey and friends series which have been very popular. The collection includes new plush toys with Mickey and Minnie wearing their New Year costumes, a New Year Mickey Minnie headband, a New Year Mimi baseball uniform with classic red and gold elements, a traditional mug-shaped mug with a lid, a New Year Mickey and friends dragon dance ornaments, and New Year Mickey Minnie Mouse limited edition badges.
The much-loved Duffy and his friends’ Chinese New Year collections are also now available.
The Chinese New Year lucky bag is also one of the popular New Year’s products that tourists love. This year, the Shanghai Disney Resort once again launched the 2020 Chinese New Year lucky bag, which not only contains popular Disney products, but also a red envelope that wins something every time. It has a chance to win two round-trip air tickets from Shanghai to Tokyo sponsored by China Eastern Airlines.
Shanghai Disney Hotels During Chinese New Year
Disney’s two hotels will not only be decorated with traditional Chinese New Year decorations, but will also launch a wealth of interesting folk activities including handmade lantern making, Chinese calligraphy, paper cutting, and coloring masks. Children can also listen to traditional folk tales, guess lantern riddles, draw festive masks and experience the fun of traditional Chinese New Year culture in the hotel lobby.
During the festive season, the Shanghai Disney Resort will host a unique Chinese New Year carnival in Disney Town, which not only includes the performances of the Chinese New Year and the Dragon Dance, but also a variety of traditional hand made crafts, snacks and toys. Every weekend during the Spring Festival, Mickey, Minnie and Disney dancers in traditional New Year costumes will also appear.
