Chinese City Accused of Copying Disney’s Logo
A city in China named Dalian is under fire because their new logo looks an awful lot like Disney’s logo.
According to CNN.com, “The Dalian Culture and Tourism Bureau last week unveiled the winner of a competition to design its new logo, complimenting the “use of a few strokes” to “vividly” showcase the city’s characteristics.”
Logo Ripoff?
CNN.com continued, “But Chinese internet users were quick to point out that the design strongly resembles the corporate logo used by Disney, which operates theme parks in China and counts the country among its most important markets.
Multiple Issues
The South China Morning post reported, “Logonews.cn, a Chinese website dedicated to logo designs, questioned the originality of the winning work on Monday in a posting on microblogging platform Weibo.
The Logonews.cn post went on to say that a comparison with the Disney logo found the winning design appeared to have copied the letters from the Disney logo and “even the graphic part is suspected of taking other references” – pointing to the similarity of the circle around the lighthouse to the line traced by a star in the animated version of the Disney logo.”
The City of Dalian
According to Wikipedia, “Dalian is a major sub-provincial port city in Liaoning province, People’s Republic of China,[5] and is Liaoning’s second largest city (after the provincial capital Shenyang) and the fourth most populous city of Northeast China.”
China is a big market for Disney, which opened their theme park in Shanghai in 2016.
