‘The Rise of Skywalker’ Projected To Have a $450 Million + Global Debut
It’s going to be a Star Wars weekend Disney friends and already projections are pouring in regarding how well the final instalment of the Skywalker trilogy will fare!
According to a recent piece in Deadline, Disney will ring out its $10 billion-plus global 2019 with Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, in what is expected to be a $450M global opening. In comparison, that’s what Star Wars: The Last Jedi opened to in 2017, behind The Force Awakens’ $528.9M.
Skywalker will open in France, Germany and Italy on today with previews in China and domestic previews starting at 6 p.m. Thursday. They current projection is that the fill will earn at least $200M+ in U.S./Canada and $250M abroad. This includes roughly $20M in China where the reception for the space saga remains lukewarm.
Many analysts are also projecting that this might be the last mega global opening for cinemas until 2021! Though 2020 is peppered with hits that are sure to fill seats, it is in 2021 that hits like Thor: Love and Thunder, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, Matrix 4 and of course the mother of them all, Avatar 2 are expected to hit theaters.
Turning our attention to advance sales, right now ‘The Rise of Skywalker’ is on par with ticket sales for ‘The Last Jedi’ and indicate at least a $200 million opening. As we reported here on MickeyBlog, the film premiered in Hollywood on Monday Night and the overall consensus is that the film ties together nicely all the loose strands from the previous films.
‘The Rise of Skywalker’ is slated to play at 4,300 theaters by Friday. This includes 3,200 3D locations, 415 Imax screens, 850 Premium Large Format screens and 275 D-Box/4D locations. Fan event screenings across 450 theaters are slated to take place beginning at 5pm on Thursday. In addition, 21 theaters in the major market will be running a 9 film Star Wars marathon kicking off this evening and leading into Thursday’s opening! Overall, Skywalker will be Imax’s widest global release to date with 1450 screens in 75 countries.
Previous Star Wars title The Last Jedi opened to $235M abroad. The Force Awakens did $312M in the same markets. The Last Jedi finaled at $712M overseas at The Force Awakens did best in the UK, China, Germany, Japan and France, rolling up to a $1.13B international gross.
