VIDEO: Star Wars As You’ve Never Seen It Before – Kabuki Style
If you’re a Star Wars fan then you’ve probably seen many incarnations of the franchise from feature films to shows like the all-new Mandalorian. However, we promise this retelling of the Skywalker Saga is unlike you’ve ever seen before and it comes straight from Disney Japan!
The ancient art of the Jedi meets the ancient art of kabuki in a new staged performance! On Thanksgiving, Disney’s Japanese division live-streamed a Kabuki adaptation of the Skywalker Saga from Star Wars featuring familiar characters including Luke, Leia, Kylo Rena and Supreme Leader Snoke.

The Kabuki performances was titled Star Wars Kabuki-Rennosuke and the Three Light Sabers and featured esteemed kabuki actor Ichikawa Ebizo XI in the role of Kylo Ren.
The story combined elements of the latest Star Wars trilogy including the pivotal moment from The Last Jedi when Kylo and Luke faced off on the planet Crait. The audience was made up of 50 online lottery winners.
This isn’t the first time that Star Wars and kabuki have come together! George Lucas has mentioned in the past that when he was creating the Star Wars universe he drew influences from Japanese cinematic influences including the 1958 Kurosawa film The Hidden Fortress.
