‘Frozen 2’ Slated To Be Disney’s 6th $1 Billion Hit of 2019
It goes without saying that it’s been a banner year for Disney! Throughout 2019 we’ve been sharing the news with you about how Disney has absolutely smashed it at the box office. From blockbusters like “Avengers: Endgame” to surprise sleepers like ‘Aladdin,’ Disney has had 6 films that have crossed the $1 billion mark in 2019. Disney has grossed more than $8 billion at the global box office for the studio. This makes 2019 the highest-grossing year of a studio ever!
Tonight, of course, marks the start of premieres nationwide for what is sure to be the studio’s next big blockbuster “Frozen 2.” Most insiders say that the film is the stuff of box office gold. In a recent report on CNBC, Erik Davis managing editor at Fandango said, “I think a lot of kids are realizing how much nostalgia they have for ‘Frozen. It’s the first film for that generation that they can be nostalgic for.”
For this reason, the film is expected to haul as much, if not more than the first film by the end of its run! This in and of itself would be a mighty feat considering the original “Frozen” earned more than $400 million at the domestic box office, went on to gross $1.2 billion worldwide and it even took home the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature film in 2014.
“Frozen 2” picks up not long after the end of “Frozen,” with Anna, Elsa, Kristoff, Olaf and Sven leaving Arendelle to travel to an ancient forest in a far-off enchanted land. Their quest is to find the origin of Elsa’s frosty powers saving Arendelle in the process.
As of going to print, current estimates for the film’s opening weekend range from $120 million to $140 million. Paul Dergarabedian, a senior media analyst at Comscore said, “A $100 million three-day weekend is a foregone conclusion,”
If pre-sales are anything to go by, “Frozen 2” has already outsold pre-sales for “Toy Story 4” and “Incredibles 2” combined and has also surpassed “The Lion King” and “Aladdin” according to sales reports for Atom Tickets.
As CNBC points out, If sales and consumer interest remain high, “Frozen 2” could dethrone “Incredibles 2″ and become the top animated movie opening in North America of all time. But, it will need to earn more than $182.6 million in its first three days in theaters.
