Frozen 2: Thoughts From Across The Pond
As pre-release hype goes, Frozen 2 is second only to a Star Wars movie. And while the initial buzz here in the states is pretty good – a solid 81% on the tomato meter.
But it’s interesting to see what kind of excitement Frozen 2 is generating in the UK.
The Evening Standard reported:
The first reviews for Frozen 2 have been revealed, and the majority of critics have been full of praise for the Disney sequel.
The film rejoins characters Anna, Elsa, Olaf and Kristoff three years after the events of the original, as they venture north to discover the origin of Elsa’ magic powers. Early signs suggest the movie could be one of the biggest Disney releases of all time, with the original taking $1.3bn around the world.
The Standard’s Charlotte O’Sullivan praised the film’s “technical invention”, as well as the “wit and emotion crammed into every set-piece” in her four-star review.
And here’s a few more from over the pond:
The Telegraph – Four stars
“The most burning question about Frozen II was whether or not Disney would be able to concoct a new show tune with enough hurricane-force to knock Let It Go off its perch. Chris Buck and Jennifer Lee’s long-anticipated sequel to their 2013 animated blockbuster answers it within about half an hour, and the answer is a rafter-shaking yes.”
Empire – Four stars
“Frozen’s happy ending gives way to a big-screen sequel that — as they tend to — goes bigger, bolder, and more epic.”
Mirror – Four stars
“Warm your heart with Disney’s magical animated sequel which surpasses the first for fun and adventure and is guaranteed to enchant a new generation of young female fans… by allowing the characters to grow they keep the story fresh [Disney] leave the door firmly open for another sequel.”
Digital Spy – Four stars
“There’s nothing to match the hiss-worthy Prince Hans reveal or the smart subversion of the true love trope here. But that’s not enough to stop Frozen 2 being an extremely satisfying sequel. “
The Guardian – Three stars
“At times, Frozen II almost felt like an extended bonus featurette that could have gone with the Blu-ray edition of the first film. Having said that, it looks and sounds good, with a stirring central song for Elsa entitled Into the Unknown, the curtain-raiser for her encounter with the primeval forces of the forest… It’s an entertaining revival, though a thaw is beginning to set in.”
The thaw is setting in? Yeesh.
No matter. I’ll be there on opening night. Will you?
