10 Lesser Known Disney Films Headed to Disney’s New Streaming Service
We are mere weeks away from the official launch of Disney+ and with it comes a whole plethora of incredible programming including the chance to see almost every Disney film ever released! This means that many titles that you may have forgotten will now be available to experience once again!
Here are 10 you’ll want to be on the lookout for!
1.The Sword and the Stone
This animated classic has the distinction of being the last film that Walt Disney approved. Based on the Arthurian legend it was released in 1963 and features the iconic Merlin the Magician. However, like some of the movies from that time period, it hasn’t remained a mainstream Disney flick but is still a great one- definitely worth a re-visit!
2. Bednobs and Broomsticks
Employing the same live/animation style of Mary Poppins, this film is an instant classic! It’s filled with catchy tunes from the Sherman Brothers, a stellar performance from Angela Landsbury and David Tomlinson and tells the tale about two children who go to live with an apprentice witch during World War II.
3. The Black Cauldron
The Black Cauldron definitely makes the list as one of Disney’s spookier animated films! Combining elements of horror and fantasy, it tells the story of a young boy and his group of misfit friends who embark on a quest to find an item possessing dark magic before it falls into the wrong hands!
4. Oliver and Company
Oliver and Company has the 80s written all over it! From the stylistic New York City backdrop to songs performed by Huey Lewis, Bette Midler and Billy Joel, we’re always sad to see this flick fall slightly under the radar! Essentially a reworking of Dicken’s Oliver Twist it tells the story of an orphan dog who joins up with a band of pickpockets to try to make his way in the big city!
5. The Rescuers Down Under
Boy, do these cute and cuddly characters bring back memories. This is one of those rare sequels that is better than the original film! The action takes place in the Australian Outback and tells the story of Bernard and Miss Bianca who attempt to rescue a little boy protecting a golden eagle from an evil poacher.
6. Pooh’s Grand Adventure: The Search for Christopher Robin
I’m a firm believer that what the world needs are more Winnie the Pooh movies! If it’s been years since you’ve watched one of the classic Pooh films, make this the one you dive into! During this visit to the Hundred Acre Wood, Pooh and friends embark on a treacherous quest to search for Christopher Robin who has gone missing. What awaits is a perilous journey filled with dangerous obstacles as the gang tries to outrun the Skullasaurus.
7. Muppet Treasure Island
This list wouldn’t be complete without mention of at least one Muppet film! Muppet Treasure Island is headed to Disney+ which has to be one of our favorites in the canon (no pun intended). Does it get any better than a swashbuckling adventure with Kermit, Miss Piggy, Gonzo and Tim Curry!?
8. The Chronicles of Narnia
The fact that The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe is headed to Disney+ should delight fans of both C.S. Lewis and the fantasy genre. The story tells the tale of four kids who travel through a wardrobe to the land of Narnia and learn about their destiny with the guidance of a mystical lion.
9. Fantasia 2000
In 2000, Disney released a sequel to the classic Fantasia film that has always remained slightly under the radar. Though you may remember the updates to Sorcerer Mickey, be sure to give the rest of the film a go. For many of us, it will be like seeing it again for the first time!
10. Atlantis the Lost Empire
This film spins a timeless tale that is parts steampunk, parts sci-fi and still incredibly relevant. It follows a young adventurer who becomes the key to unravelling an ancient mystery when he joins up with a team of explorers to find the lost city of Atlantis! The lead is voiced by Michael J. Fox who completes this epic quest begun by his late grandfather.
Be on the lookout for the awesome films above when Disney+ streaming service comes out next month! Each one is the perfect adventure for those cold weather nights!
