Why Bob Iger Decided Not To Bid On Twitter
Disney CEO Bob Iger is currently making the media rounds to promote the release of his new book “The Ride of a Lifetime: Lessons Learned from 15 Years as CEO of the Walt Disney Company” and lots of interesting tidbits are being revealed as a result. One that we here at MickeyBlog found the most interesting is Iger, speaking about backing off a deal to buy Twitter.
According to a recent piece in the New York Times, Iger revealed that though the idea of taking over control of the social media platform was compelling as a new way to reach consumers he ultimately decided against it.
In a snippet taken from his memoir, Iger explains: “The troubles were greater than I wanted to take on, greater than I thought it was responsible for us to take on,” he told the New York Times. “There were Disney brand issues, the whole impact of technology on society. The nastiness is extraordinary.”
Iger added in his interview with NYT, “I like looking at my Twitter newsfeed because I want to follow 15, 20 different subjects. Then you turn and look at your notifications and you’re immediately saying, why am I doing this? Why do I endure this pain?” Iger ultimately revealed that he thought the Twitter brand too big to take on suggesting “Like a lot of these platforms, they have the ability to do a lot of good in our world. They also have the ability to do a lot of bad. I didn’t want to take that on,” he said.
So ultimately the Walt Disney Company gave Twitter a big pass and instead opted to purchase a majority stake in BAMTech which is a sports streaming service!
