Haunted Mansion By The Numbers
On August 9, 2019, Disneyland will be celebrating a very special occasion- the 50th Anniversary of the beloved and iconic Haunted Mansion attraction. The sprawling estate overlooking the Rivers of America is home to a lively collection of happy haunts that you’ll become familiar with as you board your “Doom Buggies” for an exclusive tour.
To celebrate this momentous occasion, we thought we’d share with you some of our favorite Haunted Mansion “By the Numbers” fun facts:
999 Happy Haunts
According to the infamous words of the “Ghost Host,” the Haunted Mansion is home to 999 Happy Haunts. But, of course, there is always room for one more!
3 Hitchhiking Ghosts
The three ghosts pictured above are known as the Hitchhiking Ghosts as they try to stowaway on your doom buggy. But, did you know that they actually have names? Ezra Beane, Professor Phineas Plump and Gus.
13 Candles
In the Grand Ballroom scene, there are 13 unlucky candles lit on the birthday cake.
20 Tombstone Tributes
There are 20 tombstone tributes that exist both inside and around the exterior of the attraction. The epitaphs on the tombstones are written in honor of Disney Legends and Walt Disney Imagineers who created and maintain the attraction.
7 Pet Tombstones
Just outside of the attraction you’ll find 7 tombstones making up a pet cemetery marking the final resting place of the many animals that have called the Haunted Mansion Home.
1 Unique Exhibition Paying Tribute to the Haunted Mansion
As we mentioned earlier this month, to celebrate 50 years of the Haunted Mansion Disneyland has launched a special exhibition- “Happy Haunts Materialize- The Art of the Haunted Mansion.” Held at the Disney Gallery on Main Street U.S.A it provides an inside look into the story of the Haunted Mansion.
3 Trees
The eerie ambience you feel the moment you set your sights on the Haunted Mansion is down to the trees that you’ll find looming large. The most prominent ones are the Southern Magnolia, Weeping Mulberry and Tolleson’s Blue Weeping Juniper.
18 Years of Tim Burton-themed Fun
Since 2001, the Haunted Mansion has been transformed each fall into Haunted Mansion Holiday, a tradition celebrated by guests year after year. This “Nightmare Before Christmas” overlay brings some extra special elements to this much-loved attraction including a bit of help from Sandy Claws, Sally, Zero and a towering gingerbread display.
400 Flickering Candles
During the Haunted Mansion Holiday overlay, more than 400 flickering candles are used to create a ghostly glow on the facade of the attraction.
2015- The Return of Hatbox Ghost
The Hatbox Ghost was featured in Haunted Mansion when the attraction first opened. Then, he mysteriously vanished, only to reappear in 2015 in time for the 60th anniversary of Disneyland. He has been happily scaring visitors ever since.
The Phantom 5
The singing bust quintet that you see in the graveyard scene is made up of Rolo Rumkin, Uncle Theodore, Cousin Algernon, Ned Nub, and Phineas Pock.
20,000 Leagues of Musical Mayhem
The pipe organ that you see in the ballroom sequence was featured as Captain Nemo’s pipe organ in the official Disney film “20,000 Leagues Under the Sea.”
Pages 1312 and 1313
The title of the spell that appears in the book in Séance Circle is taken from the Disney film, “Blackbeard’s Ghost”. The large book of incantations is entitled Necronomicon—Book of the Dead and is opened to pages 1312 and 1313.
We hope you’ve enjoyed this quick look at some of our favorite Haunted Mansion fun facts. In August, guests may also choose to attend one of the special events, “The Haunted Mansion: Celebrating 50 Years of Retirement Unliving.” These after-hours soirees at Disneyland are filled with chills, thrills and frightful fun. Guests will unearth commemorative anniversary merchandise items, delight in spirited sips and bites, enjoy special entertainment, character encounters, photo ops, and access to several west-side park attractions.
