More Casting Selections For Disney’s Live Action Little Mermaid Revealed
Earlier this week we shared the news that a live-action version of “The Little Mermaid” had been given the green light by Disney and that Melissa McCarthy was in talks to take on the role of the super-villain sea witch – Ursula. Since then , more casting details have emerged and we here at MickeyBlog are excited to share with you what we’ve heard so far!
According to various online sources, Jacob Tremblay and Awkwafina have signed on to play the roles of Flounder and Scuttle! You’ll know Awkwafina, 31 from last year’s Ocean’s 8 and Crazy Rich Asians. Tremblay, 12, was nominated for a Screen Actors’ Guild award for his performance in Room back in 2015.
“Mary Poppins Returns” director Rob Marshall has reportedly signed on as director of “The Little Mermaid,” which will combine original songs from the 1989 animated hit with new tunes from the original composer Alan Menken as well as “Moana’s” Lin-Manuel Miranda. Miranda is also producing the film along with Marshall, Marc Platt and John DeLuca. David Magee wrote the script.
But What About Ariel?
Of course, the announcement that EVERY Little Mermaid fan is waiting for will be who is filling the shoes (or should we say fins) of Ariel. Though nothing definitive has been announced yet, we’ve heard rumors that Zendaya (of Spider-Man fame) is in the running. As a matter of fact, in an interview with People last year she had this to say of taking on the role: ““I loved The Little Mermaid. It is honestly one of my favorite movies of all time. I was obsessed with it when I was a little kid.”
Speculation only grew when Zendaya was spotting sporting new auburn locks during the premiere and press tour for “Spider-Man: Far From Home” which many are seeing as a tip of the hat to her upcoming role. What do you think?
