‘Toy Story 4’ Earns a Modest $47.4 Million at the Box Office on Friday
Toy Story 4 opened to tons of fanfare from critics and Pixar fans last week. With a current Rotten Tomatoes rating of 98% it is the stuff os Summer box office gold. That’s why it’s surprising that reports are trickling in that the latest installment in the Toy Story franchise actually underperformed at the box office on Friday when compared to some of Pixar’s previous summer releases. According to a report in Forbes, the film earned a cool $47.4 at launch.
Though by many accounts that’s still an impressive start to its box office run it does show the Toy Story 4 lagging behind other sequels like Finding Dory (which earned $56 million) an Incredibles 2 ($71 million.)
It’s still early days for the film and we’ll take a closer look at the entire weekend performance on MickeyBlog later this week (so keep following along.) However current projections have the film coming in slightly under Toy Story 3 which earned $100 million opening weekend. While it’s still an impressive opening by all accounts, the fact that Toy Story 4 may come in at under the project ed$150 million does make it feel a bit lackluster.
But, readers shouldn’t overlook the fact that the Toy Story films have historically been slow burners. For instance Toy Story 3 had impressive staying power and played throughout the Summer of 2010 leading it to eventually earn an impressive $415 at the domestic box office and $1 billion worldwide.
This is certainly a story we’ll be watching closely over the upcoming weeks so keep following along.
