Is the Main Street Cinema at Disneyland Being Turned Into a Gift Shop?
It’s the end of an era at Disneyland Resort if the information that we are hearing is true. Various online sources including ComicBook.com are reporting that the Main Street Cinema on Main Street U.S.A at Disneyland theme park has turned into a makeshift retail outlet!
A wonderful nod to the Disneyland of days gone by, the cinema was known by Disneyland regulars as the perfect place to relax and cool off while enjoying a look back at some of Walt Disney’s pioneering animated films including:
- Steamboat Willie, 1928
- Plane Crazy, 1928
- The Moose Hunt, 1931
- Traffic Troubles, 1931
- The Dognapper, 1934
- Mickey’s Polo Team, 1936
However, reports started trickling in on Friday that visitors to the theme park noticed that wasn’t business as usual when popping by the Cinema. Rather, signage could be seen out front letting guests know that the Cinema now housed a shop called cartoons and collectibles.
Report from visitors to the parks suggests that films can clearly be seen running in the background, as usual. However, there is a cash register in the rear of the theater as well as makeshift displays selling various bits of Disneyland merchandise including their line of patriotic items (find out more about those here.)
The change has caused a furor among many Disneyland guests arguing on Twitter that many of the items now found in the cinema are not unique to the shop but rather can ALSO be found at various retails locations around the park.
As of going to print, Disneyland has not officially confirmed the change. Nor have they indicated whether this was a trial or just a temporary fixture. However, if Disney does listen to the popular option we may see the merchandise leave as quickly as it came!
