James Gunn Opens Up About His Firing and Reinstatement for ‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3’
In a recent interview with DEADLINE, James Gunn director of the popular ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ films is talking a bit more openly about his firing and reinstatement following a scandal centring around tweets he published joking about serious topics like rape and abuse.
He was rehired to direct the third instalment of the film earlier this year after the film’s stars penned an open letter to the studio asking for his return. Gunn said that Disney totally had the right to fire him after the allegations were levelled against him and that he feels bad about some of the ways he’s spoken in public in the past and some of the jokes that he’s made.
In his interview with DEADLINE Gunn stated, “I feel bad for that and take full responsibility.” From the moment he was fired last July Gunn went on record as saying that his tweets were indefensible and that he was prepared to suffer the consequences of his actions However, 10 days after his firing, many of the franchise’s key Cast Members including Bradley Cooper, Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Karen Gillan, Vin Diesel and Dave Bautista stood behind the director and in a public statement said, “We believe the theme of redemption has never been more relevant than now.”

As of going to print Gunn is currently working on ‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3’ and said it was definitely emotional getting called back to work on the film. He says in the interview that he was contacted by Disney Co-Chairman Alan Horn who said inviting Gunn back felt like “the right thing to do.” Gunn added that he was very touched by Horn’s compassion and at the chance to continue to work on a series of films very near and dear to his heart.
Gunn added that one of the things that he’s most looking forward to is completing the story arch for Rocket. gun said that not only is it the character that he identifies with the most but that the character played by Bradley Cooper has taken on a much larger role in the last two Avenger’s films and this arch is set to be completed in the next Guardians film.
The interview finished with Gunn looking back on the whole experience and recalling, “There’s a lot of really positive stuff that has come out of all of this, and one of the positives is I was able to learn. People have to be able to learn from mistakes. If we take away the possibility for someone to learn and become a better person, I’m not sure what we’re left with.
