Disney+ Streaming Service To Include Movies From The Disney Vault
Aside from the huge Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge news we received yesterday at the Walt Disney Shareholders Meeting, Bob Iger gave some updates on the new Disney+ streaming service that is set to debut later this year. It will include A LOT of movies, in those in the Vault.
The “Disney Vault” is the term used by Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment for its policy of putting home video releases of Walt Disney Animation Studios’s animated features on moratorium. Each Disney film is available for purchase for a limited time, after which it is put “in the vault” and not made available in stores for several years until its re-release.
We knew that movies from Marvel, Pixar, Fox, and Lucasfilm will be on there, but we also got confirmation that the service would also include the “vaulted” movies.
“I think the strategy will be long term pretty heavily weighted toward internally sourced,” Iger stated, but “there will be occasions where we will be glad to license from third parties. Because the Fox deal hasn’t closed yet — so we can’t take advantage of some of their capabilities — and because we need to launch the [Disney+] service with some volume and it takes time to ramp up, we’re buying certain products form the outside opportunistically.”
Disney+ is an upcoming online video streaming subscription service owned and operated by BAMTech, a subsidiary of Walt Disney Direct-to-Consumer and International. The service is set to launch in the United States in September 2019, and will be focused on film and television content from Walt Disney Studios.
