Disney Theatrics Wins 2019 Green Broadway Award!
To run a marathon, you can’t expect to toe the start line without having trained for the distance and expect to cross the finish line. Take it from me, a still-novice runner…you have to start very small. First, you have to want to invest in running.
Once the decision is made, the fun part begins: the slow, tedious, and seemingly never-ending training process! The small steps that seem insignificant, like waking up early to run an easy 3-miler before a long work day- are what make the difference on the race course…it’s the small steps that count!
Disney Theatrics isn’t training their companies to run marathons, but instead, they’re taking similar steps to improve their energy efficiency on all their Broadway and touring productions! In 2018, Disney Theatrics furthered their push for environmentally-friendly productions. Their meticulous efforts did not go unrecognized, because they are the recipient of the 2019 Green Broadway Award!
Disney Theatrics
Disney Theatrics has a long history of wowing theatergoers on Broadway. Times Square’s major upgrade since its dark, dreary 80’s days is due in large part to Disney’s presence on Broadway and the company’s desire for wanting theatergoers to feel safe seeing one of their shows. Not even two years after its cinematic debut, the animated hit Beauty and the Beast made a debut of a different sort- this time with live performers on Broadway!
Since Beauty and the Beast broke ground for Disney on Broadway, the Company began producing show after show…and they aren’t showing any signs of slowing down! Today, there are three Disney shows playing on Broadway that you can catch on your next visit to the Big Apple, plus countless other productions on the road.
Green Broadway Award
Every year, The Broadway League hosts a conference in celebration of the coalition of theaters that operate under the alliance. Fittingly, this years’ Bicentennial conference was held in the backyard of the Place Where Dreams Come True- Orlando, Florida!
Like working up to a marathon, Disney received the award not by one grand gesture, but by a series of smaller, more impactful changes that will last for years to come. According to the Orlando Sentinel, in this past year, Disney updated their New York offices with the installation of waterless urinals.
They also assigned a “Green Captain” to every show to manage unnecessary waste disposal. Additionally, they invested in wind power systems to help offset the 5,000 tons of carbon pollution.
When speaking on the honor, Thomas Schumer (President and Producer of Disney Theatrical) had this to say: “Like so many producers in the Broadway community, we at DTP are committed to finding new ways to produce and run our shows to align with higher environmental standards. Our casts, crews, musicians and staff proudly engage in these efforts, and we look forward to discovering even more ways to innovate.”
The next time you head to the Big Apple, you can catch a Disney Theatrical performance of Aladdin, Frozen, or, The Lion King! They’re currently playing 8 times per week on Broadway, but if New York isn’t in your travel plans, you can catch Disney Theatrical productions on tour across the country!
Wherever you plan to see a show, be sure to keep in mind all the environmentally-friendly steps Disney is taking to help us conserve our planet Earth, and consider how you can make a difference too! Visit the link here for more information on the Disney Conservation Fund.
