Future of Live Action Pinocchio Looks Iffy as Director Steps Down
When it comes to Disney cinematic releases, momentum is really building for Disney’s live-action adaptations of classic animated films. In 2019 alone we are welcoming live-action versions of Dumbo, Aladdin and The Lion King. An upcoming adaptation that generated a lot of buzz in 2018 was Pinocchio. The future looked bright for Jiminy Cricket, Pinocchio, Gepetto and friends with the news that director Paul King (Paddington) would be directing as well as the rumor that Tom Hanks as Gepetto. However, several weeks in to 2019, the future for this project now looks rather uncertain.
In a recent interview with Discussing FIlm, cinematographer Seamus McGary confirmed recent rumors that director Paul King has stepped down from the project. This marks the section instance of the film losing a director with Sam Mendes who was originally attached to the project stepping down in 2017. During the interview, McGarvey revealed that Disney even went so far as to cancel the project over the holidays. However, as of going to print neither King nor Disney have commented about the status of the project.
