Police in Orange County Are Investigating the Theft of Props from Retired Epcot Attraction
According to reports from various news sources sometime in early August of this year, someone entered an off-limited area of the Wonders of Life Pavilion at Epcot and stole a red bomber jacket, rubber hands and a hat from a now retired animatronic character known as Buzzy. According to officers on the scene, the area wasn’t secure and offered several points of entry where the suspect(s) could have entered the area.
Recently released reports show that one suspect, 24-year-old Patrick Allen Spikes of Orlando has been interviewed about the alleged theft. He was booked into jail last Wednesday after being charged with resisting arrest (without violence.) The arrest was said to have occurred after the suspect refused to hand over his phone to investigators. During the interview things allegedly became heated and Spikes told detectives he was feeling unwell. Reedy Creek firefighters took Spikes to Dr. Phillips Hospital and he was later booked on resisting arrest charges.
The items stolen were estimated to be worth about $600 together. However, there is speculation that both items would be incredibly popular on the black market and could fetch well above their estimated value.
Buzzy (the animatronic at the center of the theft) was part of an exhibition called Cranium Command at the Wonders of Life Pavilion in Epcot. The exhibition offered a fun look at how “the lean, mean thinking machine,” the human brain worked. Guests first watched a video in witch a rookie recruit named Buzzy was assigned to take over the controls of a 12-year-old boy’s brain. Visitors then entered a theater to join Buzzy inside the boy’s head and saw firsthand how the brain reacted with different things happened throughout his day.
