Disney Planning Live-Action Adaptation of Neil Gaiman’s “The Graveyard Book”
Back in 2012, the internet was abuzz with the news that Disney was interested in releasing a live-action film adaptation of Neil Gaiman’s critically acclaimed novel “The Graveyard Book.” The project quickly built momentum with Henry Selick (Nightmare Before Christmas) originally lined up to direct the feature. However, by 2013 Selick had stepped away from the project and it was rumored that Ron Howard would take over the helm. Months later it looked like Howard also took a pass and little has been mentioned about this ambitious new project since. That is until a piece appeared in the Hollywood Reporter earlier this week.
THR interviewed Disney’s film chief Sean Bailey recently about the studio’s upcoming live-action releases. When asked what Disney’s live-action strategy was going into 2019 and beyond Bailey had this to say: “There are projects like [2020’s] Jungle Cruise. We tip our hat to the [Disneyland] ride in a couple of places, but it’s a wholly invented new story and a hoped-for series of movies. We’re making Artemis Fowl with Ken Branagh, which is obviously a book series but hasn’t been on the screen. The Graveyard Book by Neil Gaiman is something we’re excited about.”
Bailey’s comments are great news for those hoping that a live action version of Gaiman’s much-loved novel would see the light of day. Released in 2008, The Graveyard Book won several literary awards including the Carnegie and American Newberry Medals. The book tells the story of a mortal boy named Nobody “Bod” Owen who is raised by ghosts in a graveyard.
