Amazing Facts You Never Knew About Disney’s Frozen
When the movie Frozen debuted a few years ago, Queen Elsa and Princess Anna took the world by storm – or should I say snow storm, literally. Since 2013, Elsa, voiced by Idina Menzel, and Anna, voiced by Kristen Bell, have become an icon and inspiration for people around the world. You may think you know everything about the famous princess and queen, but there are probably things in the movie you may not have noticed the first time around.
Evil Elsa
To start out, Elsa was originally supposed to be an evil character. This was officially stated in the bonus features on the Frozen DVD. Throughout the movie, Elsa faced many problems, mainly being that she could not control her powers and was portrayed as evil. In the end, Elsa and her sister Anna fixed these problems through love.
Queen Anna
Can you imagine how different it would have been if Elsa stayed the evil character she was originally supposed to be? Would Anna have become queen? Elsa definitely would not be looked up to by little girls as she is today! The change to keep Elsa as one of the hero’s of the movie was definitely a smart choice and a huge factor in why the movie was so successful.
Elsa is 21 and Anna is 18?
In most Disney movies, including Frozen, the age of the princesses are not stated (exception for the movie Tangled. Rapunzel celebrates her 16th birthday. Fun fact – Rapunzel and Flynn Ryder had a short feature in “For The First Time in Forever”). Each princess’s age is estimated in the Disney movies. Although Frozen does not state Elsa or Anna’s age, they can easily be predicted.
Elsa is most likely 21 years old. In the beginning of Frozen, a civilian in the village states that it is coronation day and “the queen has finally come of age.” We can guess that this means Elsa has just turned 21. On the other hand, we assume that Anna is a few years younger, around age 18.
A Case of Foreshadowing?
Frozen consists of foreshadow after foreshadow. In the beginning of the movie, the ice harvesters are singing the song Frozen Heart. The lyrics have many foreshadows such as the lines “Born of cold and winter air and mountain rain combining, this icy force both foul and fair has a frozen heart worth mining, so cut through the heart, cold and clear, strike for love and strike for fear, see the beauty sharp and sheer, split the ice apart! And break the frozen heart.”
Later in the song, the ice harvesters even say, “Watch your step, let it go,” and further sing “Beautiful, powerful, dangerous, cold – ice has a magic, can’t be controlled.” Basically, this song foreshadows the entire movie. What’s crazy is that the song is almost a prophecy. They were singing this when Elsa was a child, before anyone knew about her powers.
The foreshadowing continues the night when Elsa is still a young princess and accidentally strikes her sister with her powers. The King and Queen take her to the trolls for advice on what to do about the situation. In this part of the movie, the trolls tell Elsa that she has great power, but fear will be her enemy. The trolls even create a silhouette in the air of adult Elsa using her powers.
Another thing you might have never noticed about the movie Frozen is Elsa’s powers. If you look closely, Elsa has a signature snowflake. Every time she creates a snowflake, it’s the same one – along with sparkles and stars of course. Elsa’s ice also changes colors with her mood – when she’s scared or mad, the ice has a red color to it; when she’s sad, the ice is a purplish color. When Elsa is happy, the ice is a normally, clear and shiny color.
Gloves play a huge theme throughout Frozen as well. Every time someone takes off their glove, their true self is revealed. When Elsa has to take off her glove during her coronation, her powers start to show. When Anna accidentally takes off Elsa’s glove, her powers are completely revealed. On the other hand, Prince Hans true self is also revealed when he takes off his glove. Right before he leans in to kiss Anna, he takes off his gloves. He then reveals his evil self and states that he never loved Anna and was using her to get to the crown.
You may not have noticed that the term “Let it go,” is also used multiple times throughout the movie, not just in Elsa’s famous song. Along with the popular solo by Elsa, the words let it go are also used as lyrics in the Frozen Heart song in the beginning of the movie. When Elsa’s locked up in the dungeon of her own castle, she says to Hans “You have to tell them to let me go.”
For the past five years, Frozen has been an inspiration for many people around the world. It has taught families that love is putting someone else’s needs before yours, and that some people are worth melting for.
