Disney Announces They Will Be Eliminating Plastic Drinking Straws at It’s Theme Parks
Early this week, the Walt Disney Company expanded their environmental commitment by announcing steps they would take to reduce plastic waste. As part of this commitment, Disney announced that by mid-2018, The Walt Disney Company will eliminate single-use plastic straws and plastic stirrers and all owned and operated Disney locations around the globe. This includes Walt Disney World and Disneyland and will result in a reduction of more than 175 million straws and 13 million stirrers annually.
In addition, over the next few years, Disney will transition to refillable in-room amenities in the hotels and cruise ships meaning plastic shampoo bottles will be a thing of the past. Disney also plans on reducing the number of plastic shopping bags available at the parks and on board the cruise ships and encourage gets to purchase reusable bags. Finally, Disney plans on eliminating polystyrene cups across global owned and operated businesses.
Here’s a helpful infographic on the changes that The Walt Disney Company is hoping to make to continue its journey of environmental stewardship:
Since 1995, the Disney Conservation Fund has directed more than $70 million to reverse the decline of wildlife around the world. Disney has also reduced their greenhouse gas emissions by 41% in 2017 and diverted nearly 50% of waste from landfills and incineration in 2017.
Bob Chapek, Chairman of Disney Parks, Experiences and Consumer Products had this to say about Disney’s decision to eliminate plastic straws from the parks, “Eliminating plastic straws and other plastic items are meaningful steps in our long-standing commitment to environmental stewardship. These new global efforts help reduce our environmental footprint and advance our long-term sustainability goals.
