Life Lessons from Pooh & Christopher Robin
On August 3rd, Disney’s highly anticipated movie Christopher Robin will hit the theaters. The live-action family-friendly flick is sure to touch the hearts of moviegoers of all ages. After all, A.A. Milne introduced the world to Winnie the Pooh in 1926 and he has since been the favorite bear for generations.
In my house, Winnie the Pooh has played an important part in our lives. Starting from the time I was a little girl, I was enthralled with this chubby little bear introduced to me through A.A. Milne’s book The House at Pooh Corner (1928). When life was hard, I turned to Pooh bear for some respite and some comfort — a kind of teddy bear hug.
Later in life, I had three children and I introduced them to Winnie the Pooh as soon as they were born. We sang Pooh’s songs together and laughed at his friends from the Hundred Acre Wood. To this day, my now adult children can sing every word of Pooh’s songs and Tigger’s theme song. Every one of my children had their own Pooh, Tigger, Eeyore and Piglet stuffed animal that they, too, cuddled when life got hard and they needed a respite and some comfort.
When the trailer dropped for this newest movie, I literally cried. Just in the few minutes we get to peek at, Pooh is still doing his job which is comforting and providing some of the best words of wisdom to the now adult Christopher Robin.
Here are a few examples:
Silly is okay: Christopher Robin is looking for the tree opening to help Pooh get back to his friends. When he can’t find it, Pooh says, “I suppose it’s where it needs to be,” he says. Christopher responds with, “Well, that’s a silly explanation. Pooh, believing that being silly is a compliment says, “Why thank you.” Being silly is a compliment! Thanks, Pooh for the reminder to add a little more silliness in our lives.
Just get started: “I always get to where I’m going by walking away from where I’ve been.” How can a little bear be so profound? How many of us have wanted to get to somewhere new or try something new but we’re stuck in what we’re doing now? The easiest solution is to start walking away from what’s holding you back.
Take a break: “People say nothing is impossible, but I do nothing every day,” said Pooh. Christopher Robin starts to explain to his furry friend that isn’t quite what that saying means, but I’m sure that it’s hard to convince this laid back bear that this isn’t what it means.
These are some great life lessons, but they don’t stop there. Here are some of the other classic quotes that have come from Winnie the Pooh:
“If you live to be a hundred, I want to live to be a hundred minus one day so I never have to live without you.” —Winnie-the-Pooh
“Love is taking a few steps backward, maybe even more…to give way to the happiness of the person you love.” —Winnie-the-Pooh
“You’re braver than you believe and stronger and smarter than you think.” —Winnie-the-Pooh
“How lucky I am to have something that makes saying goodbye so hard.” —Winnie-the-Pooh
And my absolute favorite, “If the person you are talking to doesn’t appear to be listening, be patient. It may simply be that he has a small piece of fluff in his ear.” —Winnie-the-Pooh
It will be fun to see how Pooh bear is going to remind Christopher Robin of the joys of life. Christopher Robin stars the legendary Ewan McGregor as Christopher Robin. How great would it be to see it in Disney?
