National Grilled Cheese Day – Disney Edition
For today only, make literal bread and butter your figurative bread and butter. Everyone who knows me will tell you I’m a pretty sarcastic person, but there are no puns or jokes here, I’m talking about National Grilled Cheese Day! The popular phrase is popular for a reason everyone: bread and butter are a delicious staple combo! And if you add a little cheese in the mix, you’ve got yourself a grilled cheese sandwich.
Walt Disney World Resort is a destination that relies on the draw of their theme parks-and it works for them! But those who visit for the parks often return for the food. Grilled cheese can be a pretty basic theme park meal option you can find pretty much anywhere…but basic is not the way the chefs of Walt Disney World roll! On April 12, seek out these mouth-wateringly delicious spins on the classic grilled cheese sandwich and you too can celebrate National Grilled Cheese Day, the Disney way.
Grilled Nontraditionally
I always save the best for last, but sometimes, the best deserves to come first! My personal favorite of all the grilled cheese sandwiches can be found inside the Beast’s Castle during the lunch dining window at Be Our Guest Restaurant in Magic Kingdom. The Croque Monsoir features ham, gruyere cheese, and beshamel sauce. I don’t know if it’s the gruyere, the grainy rustic bread it’s sandwiched between, or the perfect golden toast lines that provide an epic crunch, but this sandwich is something special. The fries that come with it sure don’t hurt.
Just because it’s served open-faced doesn’t make it any less of a sandwich! If breakfast is more your style, Be Our Guest Restaurant has another tantalizing grilled cheese sandwich absolutely worth trying! The open-faced egg, bacon, brie, and spinach combo are served atop a toasted slice of French bread. The bread is toasted and the cheese is melty; that’s a grilled cheese in my book! If you’re a sandwich purist, nothing is stopping you from cutting the slice of bread in half and eating it with your hands…that is, if you don’t mind the mess.
Over at Big River Grille at Disney’s Boardwalk, kids and adults alike have the option to order a cheesy treat as their entrée course. On the kids menu, the classic grilled cheese is served classically: regular bread with American cheese. On the main menu, though, things get interesting! You can order a plain, adult-sized grilled cheese upon request, but if you’re after something with a bit more color, go for the pub grilled sandwich. It could really be called a ‘pub grilled cheese sandwich’ since the layer of melted Swiss cheese is pretty generous among other ingredients like grilled chicken, bacon, tomato, lettuce, and onions.
Thank goodness National Grilled Cheese Day falls during Fresh Epcot, because I for one know which of these variations I’ll be biting into on April 12! The toasted pretzel bread topped with melted gruyere and black forest ham is one dish I’ve been dying to try since the start of the festival, but I’ve exercised my willpower and have successfully held off on ordering one until National Grilled Cheese Day!
Bread and Cheese and Nothing Else
As a kid, my grandfather would make grilled cheese sandwiches for my cousins and I for lunch at least one day a week. We would come in from playing outside to the sweet smells of melted butter and toasted bread, and I can’t think of ever eating a more perfect childhood lunch. If your day consists of hanging by the pool, swing by Beaches and Cream Soda Shop at Yacht and Beach Club for the classic grilled cheese sandwich. White bread + butter + American cheese + tomato soup = grilled cheese sandwich paradise. The beach atmosphere inside the restaurant will put you right in the mood for this summertime staple!
Bonus Cheese!
The last spot you can find grilled cheese sandwiches in Walt Disney World is (drumroll please) everywhere! Yes, you read that right, and no, I’m not (totally) insane; you can order a grilled cheese sandwich at any restaurant that has bread and cheese on the menu. If it’s a quick serve restaurant, ask them to whip you up a grilled cheese sandwich! At a table service restaurant, they’re able to serve you a grilled cheese upon request. Even if a grilled cheese sandwich isn’t listed on the menu, I know from experience- and from traveling with a very picky family member- that grilled cheese sandwiches are available everywhere. So which option is tempting to your taste buds? Let me know in the comments below!
