Black Panther Merchandise Available Now
Judging from how packed the movie theatre was, this past weekend’s agenda for all Americas included catching a screening of Marvel’s biggest box office release in recent years: Black Panther. I love superhero movies and the world of merchandise and games that goes along with them, but I haven’t seen any on the big screen since last year’s Wonder Woman. Maybe it’s because the previews all look the same to me, but the most recent super-films couldn’t capture my attention enough to make me pull the trigger and buy a ticket to see them at the cinema. I don’t like being left out almost as much as I don’t want to see stock action films, so when I heard from multiple sources that Black Panther shouldn’t be missed, I snapped up a ticket to a sold-out showing, and I caught the Black Panther fever!
The Film
Before I get to merchandise, a mini-review is in order…but don’t worry, no spoilers here!
As for the film’s plot and watch ability itself; Black Panther’s origin story was laid out beautifully and unfolded systematically throughout the film, revealing just enough to answer pressing questions while successfully withholding information to keep the audience wondering.
Purely from a fan’s standpoint- the action sequences were awesome. Chadwick Boseman must have trained just a teeny tiny bit for his role as Black Panther as his stunting, fight sequences, and ummm…overall appearance in his skin tight costume did not leave anything to the imagination. Action sequences between Boseman and Michael B. Jordan were a thrilling show of muscular power, though Danai Gurira and Lupita Nyong’o more than held their own in their fair share of fight scenes. The casting department did their homework as I thought every single role was cast to perfection.
Cinematically, the movie is superb. I don’t ever like when a studio chooses to use CGI sets over scale models or real locations, but Wakanda (Black Panther’s home country) is a fantastical place that is entirely unearthly, and CGI is necessary to portray that. So much attention was paid to the detail in the digital sets and props that I was completely un-phased by it and hardly noticed it was there—a huge compliment coming from someone who thinks the 1977 effects from Star Wars still look better than those in new films.
If you couldn’t already tell, I really enjoyed the film. Although many parts reminded me of a cross between a cool James Bond/Wonder Woman movie mash-up (hey, someone should make that film!), its originality-while-still-being-a-Marvel-movie shone through. I would highly recommend seeing the movie while it’s still in theatres as the sound and effects were really cutting edge and state of the art…and Chadwick Boseman’s god-like physique isn’t hard to look at for 2 hours on a giant screen. So yes, I’ve caught the Black Panther fever that’s sweeping the nation!
Bring Wakanda Home
Ss soon as I left that theatre, my immediate reaction was to go online and scour through Black Panther merchandise. Since I’m as much of a toy freak as I am superhero fan, it didn’t take long before some amazingly awesome pieces caught my eye. If you’ve got a Black Panther fan in your family, or if you’re just looking to live in the world of the film long after the credits roll, shopdisney.com is stocked with a full selection of offerings for you to choose from! Here are the hottest picks:
Coolest Toys
Starting with toys, Lego offers two sets based on the film and its characters. Hands down, the Royal Talon playset is the coolest offered. Featuring a Talon Fighter aircraft and fantastic minifigures (Black Panther, Killmonger, Nakia, and Ulysses Klaue) this set will definitely keep the attention of any die hard Black Panther fan in your household for weeks to come. For the adults: I’m already planning to add this one to my shelf- the set is worth a look for collectors!
I think the Disney Infinity-inspired Toybox line is the best new product Disney Store has released in many years. With over 10 fully articulated and impeccably detailed figures in the current series, there are many reasons to praise these new toys.
Marvel is one of the brands featured in the Toybox series, and they have just added the Black Panther himself to their collection! I can give a first hand review of the Black Panther figure – I shamelessly picked one up the same day I saw the film. The figure is detailed with muscle tone, moveable joints, and it comes with two blue ‘blasts’ that are meant to represent Vibranium. The figure is one of the sturdier ones to be produced in the Toybox line, and I would imagine he would hold up well to rough play.
Stylin’ Like T’Challa
Black Panther has one of the coolest looking super suits of any hero, so it’s not surprising that I found myself wanting to not only play with merch from the film, but wear it as well! Perfect for school, practices, and after-school activities, this Black Panther-inspired backpack is perfect for stowing all of your daily essentials. Featuring a black and white design, the backpack’s subtle-yet-obvious homage to Black Panther comes through.
Speaking of subtle, you’ll have to search a bit harder to find the Black Panther tie-in in this piece. The girls’ track jacket (sorry boys) has the Panther mask featured on the chest, but the paneled design will only be obvious to true fans of the film. The red is the same as the outfits worn by the film’s kick-butt warrior women, and I think its attention to detail and modern cut will make it the perfect jacket to add to your Black Panther-loving girls’ closet.
