Live Action Mulan Finds Its Star
Disney’s latest film trends include the live action remakes of the classic animated movies we know and love. The trend began with “Maleficent”, a twist of the classic “Sleeping Beauty” that followed the life of one of Disney’s most beloved villains. Soon after, we saw “Cinderella”, “The Jungle Book”, and most recently “Beauty and the Beast”. The hero and heroines behind these live action have been Hollywood’s biggest stars, like Angelina Jolie as Maleficent, Lily James as Cinderella and Emma Watson as Belle. Disney’s newest live-action project in the works is the beloved classic, “Mulan”. Last week the remake made headlines when the title role in Mulan was announced. Now we know that Chinese actress Liu Yifei will play our favorite Hun fighting princess.
All About Liu
“Mulan” was released in 1998 and made more than $300 million worldwide! The story follows a chinese girl who disguises herself as a man in order to fight in the war, and save her father from being drafted. Martial Arts plays a great role in the animated film, and is definitely something Liu Yifei has experience with! She starred in “The Forbidden Kingdom” alongside Jackie Chan in 2013. In addition, she is also a model and was previously a brand ambassador for the luxury brand Dior. Also known as Crystal Liu, the actress was chosen amongst 1,000 actors to play Mulan in the film. Her martial arts skills as well as her fluency in English sealed the deal for this beauty. She also has a sweet and pure image, gaining her the nickname “Fairy Sister” from her fans in China.
Something to Look Forward to
The film is hoping for a 2019 release date. Niki Caro, most recently known for directing “The Zookeeper’s Wife”, will be taking on the director role with producers Jake Weiner, Jason Reed and Chris Bender.
