Your Guide To Every Live Action Disney Film Coming Your Way Soon
The Disney live-action juggernaut machine shows no signs of slowing. In 2019 alone four-live action films have/will hit theaters: Dumbo, Aladdin, The Lion King, and Maleficent: Mistress of Evil. If rumours prove true pretty much every animated film from the ’90s is getting the treatment and even a few much older titles are also being re-imagined. As of going to print, the release date on most of these remains unclear as do whether they’ll be scheduled to hit theaters or head straight to Disney+ like Lady and the Tramp.
These Disney movies are the ones (that we know of) that are currently in some stage of planning/production:
Lady and the Tramp
Release Date: November 12, 2019
You don’t even have to head to theaters to see this one: A hybrid CGI/live-action remake of Lady and the Tramp will be available to stream on the first day of Disney+, Disney’s soon-to-launch streaming service. Justin Theroux and Janelle Monae provide the canine voices.

Mulan
Release Date: March 27, 2020
Actress Liu Yifei stars will be taking on the role of Mulan in a live-action retelling of the 1998 classic. It comes from Niki Caro the director of Whale Rider and from what we’ve heard will not be a musical like the Disney animated feature but will instead be closer to the source material.
Take a look for yourself here:
Cruella
Release Date: March 27, 2020
Coming on the heels of Maleficent, which also goes into the inner life of a classic Disney villain, Cruella shows the origins of another nefarious Disney baddie. It stars Emma Stone as a young Cruella De Vil, and Emma Thompson (in an as yet-to-be-revealed role.)
Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs
Oscar-winning songwriters Benj Pasek and Justin Paul, the team behind the Broadway smash Dear Evan Hansen, are writing the music for a new Snow White movie, directed by Marc Webb (The Amazing Spider-Man.) In addition, there will also be a spin-off movie, Rose Red, about Snow White’s sister.
The Little Mermaid
Release Date: TBD
Grown-ish star Halle Bailey is set to become Ariel in a movie directed by Mary Poppins Returns‘ Rob Marshall. The rest of the voice cast is shaping up to be similarly stacked: Javier Bardem is in talks to play King Triton, Melissa McCarthy is rumored to play Ursula, Awkwafina will be Scuttle the seagull, Jacob Tremblay is set to play Flounder and Daveed Diggs will take on the role of Sebastian!
Jungle Book 2
Release Date: TBD
Disney is reportedly working on a sequel to the live-action remake of The Jungle Book. “The idea is to go further through the Kipling but also go into some of the Disney resources from the ’67 film that maybe didn’t get to see the light of day in the first film,” screenwriter Justin Marks told /Film.
Peter Pan
Release Date: TBD
David Lowry, who directed the live-action Pete’s Dragon movie is reported to be at the helm for a live-action Peter Pan adaptation. As of going to print no casting information has been announced. We also aren’t sure whether this is a film slated for the theaters or DIsney+
The Sword in the Stone
Release Date: TBD
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Bryan Cogman, a writer/producer on Game of Thrones, wrote the script for a live-action Sword in the Stone, which will be directed by 28 Weeks Later‘s Juan Carlos Fresnadillo. No word yet on casting or cinematic versus Disney+ release.
Prince Charming
Release Date: TBD
In a similar vein to Maleficent and Cruella, an upcoming live-action Prince Charming project retells this classic rags to riches story “takes a look at the iconic prince from the point of view of his brother, who never quite lived up to the family name.” It’ll be created by Stephen Chbosky, who wrote and directed The Perks of Being a Wallflower.
These are the live-action releases that we think are a little more than rumor. Readers are of course encouraged to keep following along with MickeyBlog for the latest Walt Disney World news and updates.
