Recapping the Best Disney Links from May 2019
Literally dozens of Disney news items pop up on the internet each day. You can’t possibly keep up with all of them, but that’s okay! It’s why we’re here! MickeyBlog spends our time culling the list to find the stories that may interest you. Here are the most interesting Disney links for May of 2019.
Amazon Just Improved Your Disney Experience
I recently listed a dozen items that you need during a Disney park day. Here’s the thing about packing, though. Even the most experienced travel pros forget something on occasion. You don’t want to find yourself stuck at Disney without important sundries. You don’t want to pay Disney prices for these items, either. And nobody wants to leave the Disney Bubble to visit a store outside the campus.
What do you do when you forget something that you need? As of this month, the best answer is to buy from Amazon. Same-day delivery is now available for Amazon Prime members. Yes, when you forget to pack something, Amazon can get you the stuff that you need ON THAT SAME DAY!!! It’s a huge addition for Disney vacationers that will make all of your future trips better.
And I Thought My Typos Were Bad
Celebration, Florida, only exists because of Disney. It’s a planned community that was an integral part of the Florida Project back in the day. Given its history and heritage, you’d expect them to know how to spell the name of the man who started Disney, right? Apparently, it’s harder than you’d think. This story is just…wow.
Is “Wald Disney World” a thing or have I and the entire planet somehow missed a major typo in @CelebrationTH for a decade+ ?!@AshleyLCarter1 @ChristieZizo @audreahuff @AnthonyLeone pic.twitter.com/DgxApHp45z

A Few Disney Streaming Links
To some of you, the only streaming service that you’ll care about from now on is Disney+. For others, you’ll pick and choose among several options. If you fall into the latter category, this month had several interesting links about the future of Hulu, Netflix, Disney+, and others.
The ones I recommend are:
- Yahoo! Finance on Disney’s Opportunities
- Motley Fool explaining why Disney needed Hulu
- Fortune discussing how an outsider must approach the Disney/Netflix battle
- What polling shows about Netflix’s precarious position
- And suggestions about what Netflix should do
In a matter of months, people went from dismissing Disney’s chances to wondering how Netflix can survive in a market that has Disney+ at the front of the pack.
The Most Millennial Thing Ever at Disney
According to the media, Millennials are responsible for the murder of literally any former craze that dies. This generation has apparently killed cereal, chain restaurants, cash transactions, and golf. They’ve even somehow killed pants, a mystifying statement to me as I’m currently wearing some.
Despite the constant grousing about Millennials, one subject is unequivocally something that they love. Millennials are all about avocados. I’ve heard more avocado toast jokes over the past five years than I’ve heard Knock-Knock jokes in my entire life. I’m sure you can relate.
Disney’s leaning into conventional wisdom. They’ve developed an entire product line based on the one product that Millennials would never kill. Yes, Disney has created Avocado merchandise. You can take a look to see whether it’s for you. I do think the Mouse Ears inside the salt and pepper shakers are a nice touch.
Speaking of New Product Lines…
The live-action remake of Aladdin arrives in theaters this week. Disney’s marketing machine has been thrust into overdrive to commemorate the event. Perhaps the strangest product line is also potentially one of the most lucrative. Zales has created a dazzling array of Aladdin jewelry. It’s the latest line from a collection called Enchanted Disney Fine Jewelry. And it is OH so shiny.
Not to be outdone, Vera Wang is all-in on Mouse Ears. The designer has worked with luminaries such as Heidi Klum and Betsey Johnson plus rising stars like Karlie Kloss to create the most chic ears on the planet. You can see some of them here. Personally, I’m a huge fan of the puffy ones.
Following Up on a Couple of Stories from Last Month
In our April links, we mentioned a couple of unusual topics. One is Disney’s odd nuclear option. The company has the legal ability to build a nuclear power plant. CityLab has written an excellent piece that explores the how and why of this. The other big story last month was Abigail Disney’s economic/social commentary. She wound up testifying in Congress to make her point.
Two Stories We’ve Covered That You May Have Missed
While MickeyBlog has posted some information about a couple of funny/strange stories that happened at the parks recently, I’m going to add them here since they’ve taken on a life of their own. One involves a brazen cast member who took things that didn’t belong to him. The other one involves…an arthritis treatment. It’s been quite a month, folks.
Best Girl Scout EVER
How many Girl Scout cookies did you eat over the last couple of months? Be honest. The Thin Mints don’t lie. Hey, you’ve got no reason to feel guilty. Girl Scout cookies are one of life’s greatest pleasures. And they sell like hotcakes. Actually, they probably sell better than hotcakes.
One enterprising and kind Girl Scout in Chicago took advantage of this fact to spread some goodwill. She sold enough Girl Scout cookies to earn a trip to Walt Disney World, only she didn’t do it for herself. Instead, she pushed 5,000 boxes of cookies off on strangers in order to send a special needs student at her school on the trip. You can read the wonderful details here. This 11-year-old is already a better person than most people will ever be.
Speaking of Touching Disney Stories…
I don’t want to bum you out, so I’m going to be sparse with the details here. A little girl named Emma has spent of the first two years of her life in a hospital. She’s endured several grueling surgeries in order to give her a better chance at life. The one thing that cheers Emma up while she recuperates between surgeries is Disney movies. She especially loves princess stories.
Emma was finally able to go home the other day. The hospital staff wanted to do something special for her. They decorated her neck halo with various Disney touches. That wasn’t the big moment, though. It happened when…well, I won’t spoil it. You can read it for yourself at this link.
What’s Your Favorite Disney Movie?
This topic is one of the touchiest among Disney fans. Not only do people love their favorites passionately, they grow angry when anyone besmirches those films. For example, if you ever say a bad word about Bolt, I’ll throw you in an active volcano. You’ve been warned.
Cinemablend recently stuck its neck out with a controversial list. They selected the best 10 Disney characters of all-time. And they got most of it wrong. Belle’s ranked too low, Timon and Pumbaa are counted as one character, and Stitch isn’t even on the list. Anyway, it’s a fun conversation starter that’s worth a read.
