‘Captain Marvel’ Soars Into Theaters With Year’s Best Opening Weekend at the Box Office
What a weekend it has been from Brie Larson and crew as “Captain Marvel” finished strong at the box office this weekend selling $153 million in tickets in US theatres this weekend. This makes it the strongest opening of 2019 so far!
So how does this stack up with other Marvel juggernauts? According to a recent article in the New York Times, it is the seventh best weekend release in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Avengers Infinity War topped the list with a whopping $257.7 on opening weekend. The film comes in just behind Iron Man 3 which did a respectable $174.1 in its first weekend.
And how did it fare with the critics? According to the Times, the film currently holds an 80% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes. In comparison, “The Avengers: Infinity War” comes in 85% and Ant-Man and the Wasp at 88%.
Captain Marvel s set in the 1990s and follows Carol Danvers as she becomes one of the most powerful heroes in the Universe as she finds herself thrust into a galactic battle between two alien races that could have dreadful consequences for Earth. Played by Brie Larson, Captain Marvel is the first female superhero in the Marvel franchise to get her own film. The production also stars Samuel L. Jackson Ben Mendelsohn, Djimon Hounsou, Lee Pace, Lashana Lynch, Gemma Chan, Rune Temte, Algenis Perez Soto, Mckenna Grace, with Annette Bening, with Clark Gregg, and Jude Law.
Of course, the film also serves as a teaser for Avengers: Endgame providing viewers with insights into the fate of Tony Stark and team. “Endgame” is slated to open in theatres starting on April 26th. Picking up where “Infinity War” left off. The film stars Chris Evans, Robert Downey Jr, Chris Hemsworth, Scarlett Johansson, Mark Ruffalo, Jeremy Renner and Brie Larson as Captain Marvel. This sequel will see Earth’s mightiest heroes attempt to rise from defeat to defend the Galaxy from Thanos who is now in possession of the Infinity Stones that wiped out 50% of all life in the universe. Adrift in space with no food or water, Tony Stark sends a message to Pepper Potts as his oxygen supply starts to dwindle. Meanwhile, the remaining Avengers – Thor, Black Widow, Captain American and Bruce Banner must come up with a way to bring back their missing allies to go toe-to-toe with Thanos.
