Bob Iger Announces that 40% of Disney’s Upcoming Films Will Be Directed By Women
During a panel at this year’s Sundance Film Festival, Nina Jacobson, Paul Feig, Amy Schumer, Angela Robinson, Franklin Leonard and Tessa Thompson launched the Time’s Up and the Annenberg Inclusion Initiative 4% Percent Challenge to support female directors in the film industry.
As you can see from the image taken from the Time’s Up Website above, the idea behind the initiative is that from 2007- 2018 only 4% of the directors of 1,200 top-grossing films were women. The challenge encourages industry leaders to take the 4% challenge and commit to working with a female director on a feature film in the next 18 months.
The challenge has been making the rounds through social media and Bob Iger announced today that Disney has taken on this initiative. Check out his official tweet below:
Many have contacted us about accepting the 4% challenge, but I’m proud to say 40% of @DisneyStudios’ upcoming movie slate is being directed by women and we are striving for more!

Though Iger didn’t refer to any specific projects Captain Marvel is being co-directed by Ryan Fleck and Anna Boden. Niki Caro is at the director’s helm from the live-action adaptation of Mulan and Frozen 2 will be directed by both Jennifer Lee and Chris Buck.
Disney has not announced any other future project with females in the director’s chair but this is something we will continue to follow at MickeyBlog so be sure to check back for updates!
