7 Reasons Why We Love Disney’s Fort Wilderness Resort and Campground
For families that enjoy the great outdoors, or those just looking to do something a bit different during your Disney getaway we here at MickeyBlog have always thought of Disney’s Fort Wilderness Resort and Campground as a hidden gem, a magical world steeped in Disney magic! Whether you bring the family RV, prefer to pitch a tent or enjoy all the comforts of home with a quaint cabin, there is so much to see, do and explore. To give you a taste of the Fort Wilderness life here are 7 of our favorite reasons why you should consider a stay here.
1. The Cabins
If you are travelling with a slightly larger family, looking for amenities like a full kitchen and living area and love the great outdoors then the Wilderness Cabins may be the perfect choice for your Disney stay! They sleep up to six people, are on their own lots (meaning you don’t have to worry about noisy neightbors after a long night at the parks) and come with a charcoal grill for those that love a good BBQ.
All of the cabins also come with bunk beds which are a hit with small kids as well as a queen bed and a pull-down bed in the living room. The Cabins fall into the Moderate Category but with all of the space and amenities are usually slightly pricier coming in at over $300 a night.
2. A Great Value For Families That Like To Rough It – Fort Wilderness Resort offers terrific options for campers or those with RVs. Prices are typically under $100 a night for those want to pitch a tent to slightly over $100 for a full RV hook-up. The lots can accommodate vehicles of up to 45 feet in length. Up to 10 guests are allowed to stay in 1 plot. Visitors will, of course, pay more if staying during peak season (holidays, summer etc) or if wanting preferred spots closer to central amenities.
3. You are Just a Boat Ride Away from the Magic Kingdom
Nestled along the shores of Bay Lake, this property offers regular boat service to and from the Magic Kingdom. The boat rides usually take around 10 minutes and you’ll find yourself right in the heart of it all! The boats also run between Fort Wilderness and Wilderness Lodge for those wanting to take advantage of the amazing eateries and activities you’ll find at this neighboring Deluxe Resort. In addition, there is an internal bus system that makes it easy to get around the sprawling grounds of Fort Wilderness and regular bus services to the other theme parks, water parks and Disney Springs.
4. Fun Dining Experiences
Visitors to Fort Wilderness will definitely want to take advantage of some of the fantastic dining opportunities you’ll find on the grounds. Hoop-Dee-Doo Musical Revue is located in Pioneer Hall and is part hootenanny part vaudeville-style stage show and a whole heap of fun.
This is one of only three dinner theatre style shows you’ll find at Disney and its guaranteed to have you laughing, singing and tapping your toes as you dine on an all-you-can-eat fried chick, BBQ Pork Ribs and Corn on the Cob. There’s also beer, wine and sangria for visitors over the age of 21. Dining here will set you back around $60 per adult or two table service credits.
Or if you have a chance to visit Fort Wilderness before the end of 2018, definitely schedule in a trip to Mickey’s Backyard BBQ. This character dining/dinner show will be ending its run the end of December. However, there’s still plenty of time to bring your dancing shoes for a boogie with Mickey and Minnie and your appetites to tuck into the amazing picnic-style treats you’ll find here! This is also considered dinner show dining with prices comparable to Hoop-Dee-Doo.
5. Chip ‘n’ Dales Campfire Sing-A-Long
One of our favorite things about Fort Wilderness is this fantastic free activity. Each evening guests have the opportunity to meet Chip and Dale, make smores around a campfire and dance and sing to classic campfire songs. This activity is FREE for all onsite guests even those not staying at Fort Wilderness and frequently tops blogger’s lists of Must-do Disney activities. You can bring your own ingredients to make smores or kits are available for $8.00 at the neighboring Snack Bar.
6. A Wide Range of Recreational Activities
When it comes to picking a resort with a wide range of amenities, Fort Wilderness is a dream. This property is absolutely perfect for active families looking to spend a fair bit of time at the resort. On property, you’ll find 2 swimming pools, volleyball courts, jogging trails, Segway Tours and archery classes. You can also navigate the resort’s waterways by kayaking, canoeing or motorboat! Fishing excursions are also available.
7. Terrific Activities for Horse-Lovers
On property you’ll find the Tri-Circle-D Ranch which is an equestrian lovers dream! This stable is filled with all types of horses from giant Clydesdales to teeny Shetland Ponies. This is also the home stable for Cinderella’s cavalcade of white ponies. Trail rides are available for guests ages 9 years and up and cost around $50 for a 45-minute excursion.
Guests can also arrange for a carriage ride to take you on a fun tour through the grounds of Fort Wilderness. There are group rides available to all resort guests, or private carriage bookings. You can even opt for a sleigh ride during the Christmas season. Costs vary from $12.00 for a wagon ride to $84 for a private sleigh ride. Reservations can be made by contacting your travel agent or calling Disney directly at 407.WDW.PLAY.
