Amazing Things Disney Princesses Can Teach Us
It is a somewhat common notion today that Disney princesses aren’t good examples for young girls. People say that the films teach girls that it is okay to be weak and that you need a man to fix your problems. While some people may see Disney movies this way, I would have to disagree with them. Are there moments in the films where the princesses show weakness…of course they are human after all.
Having a weak moment doesn’t automatically turn us into a damsel in distress. As Meg would say, “I’m a damsel. I’m in distress. I can handle this. Have a nice day.” We can’t simply focus on the weaknesses. We also must focus on their strengths and how they use them to overcome their weaknesses. So, forget about those moments of weakness and instead focus on the many wonderful things that the princess can teach us. Here are just a few of them:
Mulan
Although she’s not technically a princess, Disney treats her as such and she happens to be one of my favorites. Mulan teaches us what it means to be strong and brave and to never give up. My favorite scene from the film are the scenes that are shown during the “I’ll Make a Man Out of You” song.
All these new soldiers are failing miserably, and Mulan is about ready to give up, but then she musters up her strength and determination ready to prove that she can succeed, and she does! Also, it isn’t until she reaches that first hurdle that the moral around the camp improves and the other soldier start doing better as well. She teaches us that if we are brave and believe in ourselves than we can overcome any obstacle.
Pocahontas
Pocahontas teaches us to be openminded and to respect the world we live in. It’s a difficult and unique skill to be able to look at someone or something and see beyond its face value, but Pocahontas does it with ease. She teaches us to treat others as our equals because underneath we are all the same.
In her song “Colors of the Wind” she tells John Smith “you think the only people who are people/Are the people who look and think like you/But if you walk the footsteps of a stranger/You’ll learn things you never knew.” Her open-mindedness allows her to view the world in ways that others don’t and that is something that everyone needs to learn.
Belle
We can learn many things from Belle, but the greatest is that we shouldn’t be afraid to be ourselves. Belle loves to read, and she craves adventure and no matter how many people tell her she’s weird or crazy she still stays true to herself. She never gives in to peer pressure and she’s not afraid to defend herself against Gaston and the Beast.
Tiana
Tiana teaches us what a good work ethic is. She teaches us that it is great to have dreams but for them to come true we must put in effort. Tiana has always had a dream to open her own restaurant and she knew that for that dream to come to fruition she would have to earn and save her money, so she could purchase it.
It easy to be lazy, but hard work is what the world thrives on. It’s how we learn and grow as a society. Another lesson we can learn from Tiana is without family and friends are dreams will have no value. We must learn to balance ambition with family.
Cinderella
There are a lot of people who see Cinderella a woman who needed a man to take her away from her troubles, but I don’t see that. Cinderella is great example of hope and kindness. She treats everyone around her kindly even though they are horrible to her and she has faith that someday it’ll all get better. Not only that, but she also shows great strength. It would be hard to be torn down by your family everyday and yet she manages to not let it affect her spirit.
