Review the Disney Magic at New York Comic Con 2018
This past weekend a friend and I spotted an extremely convincing “The Flash” costume near midtown. When you live in this city, sights like this are as common as a fearless pigeon and I didn’t even break my stride until my friend stopped me and whispered “look, that’s a good costume”. It took me a second to realize that “The Flash” before us was far superior in costume than the downright terrifying costumed characters I usually find haunting Times Square.
No, this man was far different. The deep red outfit was in pristine condition and fit him like a glove. Each accent panel on his chest, arms, and legs were clearly made of real leather. The stretched mesh that made up the remainder of the bodysuit flexed and bent with his every step, and it was then, right there in the middle of Manhattan that I knew our world was in trouble, and I was looking at the unbelievably realistic mask of “The Flash”…
Until it hit me. Duh! Of course his costume is leaps and bounds above those flea-riddled fur bags that frequent Times Square, and of course the woman accompanying him struck an equally-convincing costumed profile. There is one reason and one alone this couple was walking away from Times Square and towards the Hudson River; they were on their way to the Jacob Javits Center…for New York Comic Con 2018!
The news from this year’s Comic Con in the city that never sleeps was bigger than ever before, and coupled with Disney’s largest-ever presence at the con, it goes without saying that we’ve got some news for you! Here’s a recap of Disney at this years’ Comic Con.
Toys
I can almost hear my friends’ snide “of COURSE she’s starting with the toys” comments, and to that I say- yes guys, I’m absolutely starting with the toys! The highlight of the Disney toys at the convention this year focused almost entirely on Mickey Mouse and his big 90th birthday. Hot Toys, Good Smile, Funko…yep, all of the big-name brands had a presence, and all featured awesome soon-to-come Mickey and Disney figures, check ‘em out!
Film
One didn’t catch me as odd, but by the fifth celebrity tweet announcing their character in the upcoming theatrical release of Ralph Breaks the Internet, they had my attention. We knew that a sequel to Wreck It Ralph was on the way since the D23 expo, but we had NO idea the celebrity star-power Disney had enlisted in the making of this film.
Coming from a hand-drawn animation lover, the digital animation showcased in the 20-minute preview is truly remarkable and I can’t wait to see it in all its glory up on the big screen. Plus…the Disney Princesses get a BIG feature that I know will make fans of the originals (like me!) giddy with glee.
Star Wars Resistance
A long time ago, in a borough far, far away…the new Star Wars-inspired TV series was the talk of NYCC 2018! Premiering on the final night of the convention, fans were treated to last-minute hype for the new show at the Javits over the weekend, and one of the stars took time from its busy schedule to stop by to give fans a final tease before the premier.
With final still images released from the anticipated new animated series and a booth dedicated to Star Wars fans, space pirates and smugglers alike felt right at home in NYC! You can hear the full interview with the shows’ roundest star right here…my only wish is that Poe were here to translate for me…
