Exploring Oahu – Aulani’s Theme Park
Welcome to the 1st edition in our ongoing series “Exploring Oahu – Aulani’s Theme Park” here at MickeyBlog.com!!
“I didn’t know that Disney had a theme park in Hawaii!?! When did that happen? Are the rides different from Disney World?”
Aulani – A Disney Resort and Spa is a gorgeous resort with to-notch service, amazing theming, one of the best pools in the world, sunsets, a calm beach, and magical Disney touches. But a theme park? No … it is not a theme park as there are no rides and no castle to be found. But there IS a theme park readily available to guests of Aulani.
The Island of Oahu offers a variety of attractions, activities, and adventures that will keep you busy for days (if not weeks). The attractions are amusing, interesting, and well themed. It truly is nature’s Theme Park. And, for every visitor to Aulani – A Disney Resort and Spa, it should be explored and discovered!
So, come join me on this journey to explore the adventure, wonder, and MAGIC of Aulani’s Theme Park – The Island of Oahu!
Top 5 MUST SEE Attractions in Oahu
Let’s kick off our series with a simple list of the top Five MUST SEE attractions on the Island of Oahu. These are considered top attractions by most travelers for a reason and every Aulani guest should explore at least one (or more) of these special spots during their visit to Oahu.
1. Diamond Head State Monument
Hawaii’s most recognized landmark is known for its historic hiking trail, stunning coastal views, and military history. The trail to the summit was built in 1908 as part of O‘ahu’s coastal defense system. The 0.8 mile hike from trailhead to the summit is steep, gaining 560 feet as it ascends from the crater floor. The walk is a glimpse into the geological and military history of Diamond Head. Guests who make it to the top are awarded breathtaking views of the Pacific Ocean, Honolulu, and the East Shore of Oahu.
2. Waikiki Beach
With golden sand and clear blue water, Waikiki Beach is one of the most recognized beaches in the world. This 2 mile beach lines the edge of Honolulu’s bustling downtown and has an active, playful, and energetic vibe. Guests visiting this famous beach in the late afternoon may be rewarded with one of the best sunsets on the Island. Just check out my amateur photo at the top of this post!
3. Hanauma Bay State Park
Grab a beach towel, some snorkel gear and head farther east past Honolulu and Diamond Head to Hanauma Bay, a crescent shaped beach teeming with ocean life. This calm bay is a perfect spot to explore the underwater world of Oahu. Catch some rays in the sun and enjoy the 360 degree view its craggy lava rock crater which forms a perfect backdrop to the vibrant blue Pacific Ocean. Or, step into its crystal clear water and experience the ocean’s many wonders. As Moana would say … It calls me. After one glimpse of Hanauma Bay, it will call you, too!
4. The North Shore
The North Shore of Oahu is a picture of contrasts. Depending on the time of year you visit, you may find the calmest and most pristine beaches on the island – perfect for families. Stop by in the Winter months and you will witness some of the most massive waves in the world and a surfer’s mecca. Either way, this stretch of stunning beaches is filled with a laid-back atmosphere that will wash all of your cares away!
5. Pearl Harbor
Last – but most certainly not least – is Pearl Harbor. An active U.S. military base, Pearl Harbor offers a variety of tours and attractions featuring the base’s lengthy military history. The most popular attraction is the USS Arizona Memorial, the iconic memorial perched above the USS Arizona Battleship which sank during the massive attack by the Japanese on December 7, 1941. Guests can reflect and remember the heroes of the attacks in this reverent spot of historical significance.
